But the heat had gotten to him and though he was covered in sweat, the airflow was rather poor so it did little to cool him. Tossing his pick aside, Hyede returned to the mining quarters and picked up a refreshing drink and a second for the walk back.

Arriving back at his work site, Hyede finished off his second bottle of water and proceeded to continue his labors. Every so often he checked the radar map of the area he was working in to make sure his tunnel was headed in the right direction.

*Ping… Ping… Ping… Ping…*
The sounds continued to echo through the stone walls of the cavern. Hyede may have only been there for a single say so far but he’d mined out enough rubble to fill several carts, more then most of the others had ever seen. It was no wonder that by this time, several of the men had gathered simply to watch the young man work.

Hyede’s pickaxe continued to smash over and over again into the hard stone wall of the mine. His shaft was progressing nicely as seemed to be word of his reputation. His speed was of such interest to the other miners that even the foreman came down to the mining level for a few minutes to watch.

*Ding… Ding… Ding… Clank*
The unmistakable sound of metal impacting metal sounded through the side passage Hyede was digging. Instantly a hush fell over the miners that had gathered to watch, as Hyede began pulling out the second large lump of Iron of the day.

This particular one was however deciding to be difficult and it took several sturdy whacks with the pick to dislodge the chunk of metal. Eventually though the rock face was pushed back far enough where the chunk protruded out and could be knocked off the face.

Taking one last mighty swipe with the pickaxe, Hyede bashed the side of the iron deposit and the chunk came loose. This being close to the record for the most iron extracted in a single day by a single miner, the workers who’d gathered let out a quick applause before returning to their own work as the behest of the foreman.

Continuing on for his third chunk, Hyede loaded the second into the cart and returned to the wall. The sound of the steel pick banging relentlessly against the rock wall was almost hypnotic at this point.

Banging away, Hyede’s body poured out more sweat in an attempt to stay cool. Proving to be such a productive worker, the foreman returned to his office to face another ventilator duct installed in Hyede’s section to improve the air flow. The last thins he needed was the young man collapsing from heat exhaustion.

*Ding…Ding… Ding...*
Hyede toiled away in the mine, another hour passing and his rock face continuing to advance deeper into the crust of the planet.

Another hour past and while Hyede worked, several men set up shop behind him, installing the much needed cooling duct. Unfortunately at the rate the young man was moving, the duct would very soon need extending.

Bringing his axe down relentlessly into the warm stone walls of the mine, Hyede pressed on as the men behind him worked to install the air duct. It almost became a little contest of who could finish their task first.

Unfortunately the contest had to wait as the dinner horn was sounded and the afternoon work shift was called in. Thankful for the break though, Hyede made his way back to the mining facility and sat down to another filling meal.

Finishing his dinner, Hyede returned to work with the overtime shift. Not to be outdone by the young man, the workers installing the cooling duct followed him back and returned to their task.

Returning to his work, Hyede picked up his pick and started the rhythmic bashing of steel against rock once again. The workers only had a few more bolts to put in before the duct was finally blowing cool air into Hyede’s tunnel
